31.08.2010: Accompanied driving from the age of 17 introduced in Germany
On 4 August 2010 the German government decided to amend the highway code and to introduce permanently accompanied driving from the age of 17 in Germany from the 1 January 2011. The German government took this decision after having introduced accompanied driving from the age of 17 on a trial basis in 2005. The model was then evaluated and tested with regard to its road safety effectiveness by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). The positive survey results (22% less accidents) favoured now the decision to codify accompanied driving permanently into the highway code. If you are interested in the survey results, you can download a report from the BASt website in English and in German.
