SECOND SESSION: 7 April 2021, 11 am - 12 pm CET
We live in a time, where people much more often decide to live in other countries than in former times. Also, the development of new technical tools (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) runs very fast. Drivers are unique, and with very different levels of competences.
This means also that we will find different behaviour, safe and unsafe, in the daily traffic. This behaviour is the result of the learning process influenced by a number of factors like driving education, training, knowledge, personal motivation, social background, culture background, religious background, experience in traffic, understanding of rules, attitudes, etc.
There are different models and theories that, since 40 years ago, have tried to describe how behaviour in traffic, safe and unsafe, is built up:
- Theory of risk homoeostasis - RHT (J.S. Wilde, 1978, 1982)
- SRK (skills, rules, knowledge) model (Jens Rasmussen, 1983)
- The three-layered model of Donges 1982
- The Psychology of Risk-Taking Behavior, Trimpop 1994
- GDE-Matrix 2010 and adapted GDE-Matrix 2011/2014 (ECOWILL and RUE project)
With these models it is also possible to explain activities in traffic, to get an idea about the background and motivations for the behavior and to find good and effective strategies to influence the behaviour of drivers in a safe way. These two sessions will be devoted to present:
- a summary of the different models and explanations as a background to find a new way of acting in the field of influencing driving behaviour.
- a "new" risk assessment of possible behavior in traffic which can give answers if a single model of training or a very personal training is necessary to build up safe driving in the local society. Possible uses of this tool could be: development of basic driving education, for further education related to the development of ADAS systems, and to support the decision to reissue a driving licence.
