Northern Ireland’s Road Safety Strategy, which runs to 2020, outlines the key road safety challenges to be addressed in NI over the next ten years. It contains 199 measures for improving the safety of all road users which are presented under ‘Safer Roads’, ‘Safer Vehicles’ and ‘Safer Road Users’.
The vision for road safety is “to make a journey on Northern Ireland’s roads as safe for all road users as anywhere in the world”. The casualty reduction targets contained in the Strategy seek to make this vision a reality and are supported by a number of key performance indicators.
The key casualty reduction targets for 2020 are set out below (measured against a baseline of the 2004-2008 average figures):
- To reduce the number of people killed in road collisions by at least 60% by 2020.
- To reduce the number of people seriously injured in road collisions by at least 45% by 2020.
- To reduce the number of children (aged 0 to 15) killed or seriously injured in road collisions by at least 55% by 2020.
- To reduce the number of young people (aged 16 to 24) killed or seriously injured in road collisions by at least 55% by 2020.
