For many years studies have showed that young drivers would support an alcohol ban. More than 80% of them consider such a measure would help them minimise the high risk levels of this target group and avoid discussion on how much they can drink before driving. The combination of low experience and alcohol raises the already high accident risk of novice drivers and produces an unhealthy cocktail. Serious accidents occur, often leading to fatalities, and not only on the weekends.
Germany finally reacted by introducing an alcohol ban for novice drivers from August 1 2007. The new law stipulates that alcohol cannot be drunk in combination with driving for novice drivers during their 2 year probationary period and at least until they reach 21 years of age.
Experts hope that this measure will lead to less drink-driving and lower accident figures.
