24 April: CIECA Webinar - Teleoperation in future road traffic – FTD-requirements of drivers in the control center

PRESENTER: Thomas Wagner, Head of the Department of Traffic Medicine and Psychology at DEKRA e.V. Dresden (Germany)

The technological evolution from manual to fully automated driving is in full swing. Remote control methods (=teleoperation) as a bridging technology between manual and autonomous driving offering new types of services while the vehicle is operated away from the actual traffic situation by a human driver in a control center. This will redefine the human-machine interface.

Teleoperation will achieve a spatial and mental disengagement from the previous structure of the driving task. Whereas a driver in manual driving mode is entirely “in the loop” and receives and processes information about the current traffic situation, this is not the case when teleoperating a vehicle. A teleoperating driver is confronted with a selective range of information that differs quantitatively, qualitatively and in its temporal-dynamic development from that of an active driver. This changes the driving activity-related requirement profile regarding physical, mental, psychophysical performance and personal reliability features.

The presentation examines Fitness-To-Drive (FTD) characteristics such as minimum age, driving experience, psycho-physical competencies along with personal reliability and discusses testing methods. Limitations of this innovative concept are also reflected against the background of the “Ironies of Automation” published by Lisanne Bainbridge more than 40 years ago. Might the causes of accidents in future shift from the human error of the manual driver in the vehicle to the human error of the teleoperator in the control center and/or the designer behind this new human-machine interface?
