14 November: CIECA Webinar - (Driver's) license in silence?! A mixed method study of deafness in the practical test

PRESENTER: Jonathan Hötzel, student of special and inclusing education (M.A.) at the University of Erfurt, Germany

SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT: Prof. Dr. Sandra Neumann and Dr. Amelie Abarca-Hediemann, Faculty of Education, Department of Inclusive Educational Processes for People with Language and Communication Impairments at the University of Erfurt, Germany

In special education, obtaining a driver's license falls into the somewhat neglected area of leisure activities for people with disabilities. In turn, all forms of disability are subsumed into the so-called handicap training in driver's license acquisition, which until now has mainly meant the support of physically impaired people. In cooperation with the TÜV | DEKRA arge tp 21, this research project focused on the practical driving test for deaf people.

Method
A mixed-method study design was chosen consisting of a questionnaire, which was sent to the member states by the internationally active CIECA - The International Commission for Driver Testing and ten semi-standardized interviews with national experts. In the research process it has become necessary to create a questionnaire for deaf driving license candidates on a national basis. The survey phase ended with 28 valid cases for the international questionnaire and five valid responses for the national questionnaire.

Results
A dialog about possible support systems was initiated and could provide valuable solutions in the future to eliminate existing barriers. Ten barriers were identified through the interviews, which will be put up for discussion. Solution strategies can be developed with the help of international comparison.
